NU claims three-peat glory in UAAP Women’s Tennis
The National University Women’s Tennis Team secured their third championship title in the UAAP Season 86 Tennis Tournament after dislodging UST in a winner-take-all match, 3-2, at the Felicisimo Ampon Tennis Center in Manila yesterday, April 7.
Elsie Abarquez took charge of the deciding match after clinching a sweep victory in the third singles category, 6-3, 6-0.
Both NU doubles victories of the Mai Bornia-Alliah Ragunton tandem (6-2, 6-4) and Abad-Baulete duo (6-0, 6-4) led to a tied 2-2 standing with UST, resulting to a decider matchup.
Although the Lady Bulldogs faced a roadblock in their championship journey, team captain Allysa Bornia took the challenge on a positive note, sharing that it was a good wake up call for the team.
“That loss in the first tie, I think we needed that, para mapa-realize sa amin na kahit na-sweep namin ‘yung eliminations, pwede pa rin kaming matalo. And na-overcome namin ‘yun as a team,” said Bornia.
Bornia and her doubles partner Alliah Ragunton, both in their last playing term, were hailed as co-Most Valuable Players in the women’s category.
“Thankful kami sa mga seniors na nag-step up to lead the team,” said Lady Bulldogs’ head coach Ronard Joven.
Despite the departure of some veteran players in the team, Coach Joven expressed confidence in the team’s ability to regroup, recruit, and aim for more championships in the upcoming seasons.
