National U defends crown in UAAP Women’s Tennis
The National University Women’s Tennis Team clinched back-to-back championship titles after a successful best-of-three finals series against UP in the UAAP Season 85 Women’s Tennis Tournament at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Malate, Manila, April 23.
The NU Tennisters compelled a winning rout after Danna Abad went past UP in the deciding match with 6-3, 6-0 dominance to bring Jhocson another pride with their sixth tennis championship title.
Slipping only on two matches this season, the rookie shared that they put confidence in their ability to play on court and drew inspiration from the ingrained winning attitude of their coaches.
Also, both doubles category joined the pack to win against the opponent as Rovie Baulete and Angela Cabaral upset UP in two straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, and seniors Allysa Bornia and Alliah Ragunton took charge of the 6-1, 6-2 feat.
Allysa Bornia was named as the Season’s Most Valuable Player, rendering a clean slate in their season 85 campaign.
Meanwhile, the NU Men’s Tennis team remained podium finishers upon taking home bronze medals in a do-or-die game against UST. The NU tennisters crawled their way to the top and forced a quadruple-tie with UST, Ateneo, and UE for their final four race.
They also claimed a twice-to-beat advantage against UST last April 19 after taking a 3-2 decision but missed to secure their final-bound ticket after falling behind of their opponent on the latter matchups.
“Di man po namin nadipensahan ang titulo, thankful pa rin po kami. Maraming ups and downs na pangyayari at halo-halong emosyon ang aming naramdaman in the entire season,” said NU Bulldogs Team Captain Jude Ceniza.
The senior also shared that he is still grateful for what they have reached this season as they carry the pride of representing National U in the league.
