Joshua Angelo “Gelo” Alolino: Mr. Clutch with a Bulldog Spirit

Known as “Mr. Clutch,” Joshua Angelo “Gelo” Alolino became a household name during his time with the National University Bulldogs, playing a pivotal role in ending the school’s 60-year championship drought in 2014. Standing at 6 feet, Gelo’s skill in scoring and playmaking helped bring the Bulldogs back into the spotlight.

Born on January 4, 1994, Gelo’s basketball journey began under the guidance of his father, Carlo Alolino, a former varsity player and coach. After honing his skills with the University of Perpetual Help Altas in high school, he joined NU, where he quickly became a standout player. His knack for clutch performances earned him his moniker, as he routinely delivered crucial points in high-stakes moments, including his impressive 15-point showing in the UAAP finals. Reflecting on his college experience, Gelo shared, “National University helped me to grow and mature as a student-athlete. It opened a lot of opportunities in my life that helped me reach my goals.”

Balancing his rigorous training with academics as a Banking & Finance major, Gelo was not only an athletic star but also a model student. His graduation in 2016 was a proud moment, and he fondly remembers his time on the court, saying, “Our Season 77 UAAP Men’s Basketball Championship will always be on top. And my Batch 2016 Graduation.” This dedication to both sport and academics became a foundation for his future, inspiring younger players.

In addition to his basketball career, Gelo once considered a stint in showbiz after a guest appearance on Hardball sparked interest in his on-screen potential. But his dedication to basketball remains steadfast, and his disciplined lifestyle reflects his commitment to the game. Known for his focus on fitness and injury prevention, Gelo’s workout regimen includes core and leg exercises essential for a point guard’s agility and endurance.

With regard to NU’s growth, Gelo commended the advancements in academics and athletics, saying, “I’ve seen lots of progress and growth especially to educational and sports program that will greatly help the future generations of students and athletes.” For young basketball aspirants, his message is clear: “Always strive to get better. Do not be afraid to pursue your dreams and always believe in yourself. Just like what Mr. Hans Sy said, ‘Always stay humble and stay hungry.'”

Gelo Alolino’s journey from an aspiring young athlete to a champion and role model exemplifies the true spirit of a Nationalian—someone who pursues excellence, values humility, and remains connected to his roots.
